Cracks, 2009.
At the beginning, I thought “oh this is marvellous, the imagery is so lovely and oh look a boarding school (insert regrets of being too old for them) and it’s everything I could ever want, and Eva Green makes such a wonderful teacher”, but excepting the imagery, I changed my mind quickly. Still, the movie wasn’t all about bullying the girl maliciously nor about the eroticism of living within a group of girls, so there were aspects that I could enjoy in spite of those factors. I’m usually very much of a “prude” and can’t watch anything sexual or violent, but this movie took those concepts so delicately and so subtly that I could forget them and concentrate, rather, on the global aspect of a life in a boarding school. Maybe I was biased while watching this, as my dream has always been to be in a boarding school, but I remembered my grandfather’s tales about rejection and punishments and whatnot and also tried to take note of that as I watched as to not romanticise the idea so much. I love how the movie included every day activities without having to give them a sexual content, or not so much of it - lately every movie has some sort of hidden erotic ambience going on and I really dislike that. I don’t know how to explain why I liked this movie and I’m an awful awful awful movie-reviewer as you can tell.
